Austenland

Austenland (2013)

Jerusha Hess

Obsessed with the BBC production of "Pride and Prejudice", a woman travels to a Jane Austen theme park in search for her perfect gentleman.

Ridiculous gaudy boarding on cartoony, but full of heart nonetheless. An Austen-ite myself, there are certainly appealing parts of a regency era experience that I would be all for.

Jennifer Coolidge was in rare form, there for the dresses and the men and taking full advantage of a total lack of Austen knowledge. Keri Russell was still able to pull off her subtle magic, even amongst the over acting of the rest of the cast. There is a warmth to her that I just love and plays so well on the screen. While her character, Jane, is certainly full of Darcy visions, she certainly knows who she is and what she wants. She isn’t just along for the ride.

I loved watching the relationships build on screen and was guessing right along with everyone else trying to figure out what was real and what was the ‘Austen experience’. As the movie went on I feel more and more in love with Jane and Mr. Nobley. Each offering a modern day glimpse into the Elizabeth and Darcy phenomenon.

Austenland is further proof the best stories never grow old.
