Elysium

Elysium (2013)

Neill Blomkamp

Set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

Regardless of the strong start to this summer with the awesomeness that was Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness the rest of the summer quickly teetered off to the forgettable.

It has gotten harder and harder to do a good sci-fi movie that isn’t already part of a long standing franchise. I’d love to see some more original work on the screen, but without the backbone of a good story and characters you care about, it’s just another flick buried in an actors filmography.

An interesting choice for Damon and Foster, it was hard for me to get past their more iconic roles and believe them in this dystopian. While it posed an interesting social question it eventually became little more than a shiny game of cat and ugly mouse.

Little to care about and no amount of visual splash could really save it.
